ATTENTION CERTS - Your Local Neighborhood CERT TEAM needs YOU!
We need YOUR experience, YOUR ideas, YOUR enthusiasm and most importantly, YOUR help preparing YOUR neighbors to be better able to take care of themselves, each other, and possibly YOU and YOUR family when (not if) the next significant disruption happens – and it will happen! (Snow Storm; Power Outage; Ice Storm; Tornado; Flash Flood; pick your own disaster . . .)
For the past several years, the Fairfax County neighborhood CERT TEAMs have been growing; there are now over 25 local TEAMs covering almost the entire county and over 500 trained CERTs currently participating. But we want to continue to grow. This is all about Neighbors helping Neighbors – and more neighbor's means more help, better planning, and more resilient neighborhoods.
Connecting to YOUR local CERT TEAM simply means you know who in your neighborhood has taken the time to better prepare themselves for disasters. Of course we would like you to continue to participate in CERT training and exercises, and to help out with local outreach efforts; how much you participate is up to you. But when a disaster does happen and communications are limited, it may be too late to begin organizing a response – particularly since, as the CERT program and the County Office of Emergency Management keep telling everyone, the First Responders may not be able to get to everyone right away!
Joining your local CERT TEAM does not commit you to any specific obligation, it just puts you in touch with other CERTs in your area; each TEAM determines what and how much they want to do in their community; everyone is a volunteer.
So, whether you have been a CERT for 10 years and have an old dusty backpack in a closet somewhere or are currently in one of the basic CERT classes, YOUR local TEAM wants YOU! Everyone brings something valuable and joining YOUR local TEAM is very easy; just send an email to TEAMS@fairfaxcountycert.org and include:
- Your name
- CERT Class #, if you know it
- Your preferred email address
- Your street address, including zip code (zip codes help us connect local CERTs)
- Phone number(s)
We will connect you with a local volunteer CERT TEAM coordinator who can fill you in on what YOUR TEAM is doing.
Thank you and stay safe!

Incident on Meadowood Trails
Dear Neighbors,
I need to report a strange incident that occurred on the trails at Meadowood recently.
One of my clients from the stable went out on a run on the trails and came upon a rather stout man who had a female boxer dog named Daisey running loose in the woods. When the runner approached the gentleman on the trail instead of stepping to the side he stood his ground in the middle of the trail. When the runner approached and then passed she realized he was exposing himself. This is the second time this has happened to this person. The first time it happened so fast the runner couldn't/didn't believe what had happened. The second time was unmistakable. She has seen him on the trail before when she was with other people and nothing happened.
This is been reported to BLM and the local Friends of Meadowood group that is made up of local Mason Neck people. Other folks have spotted him and the dog near Mustang Field parking lot.
He's described at a stocky male, 5'8-9 approximately 50 years old. Often seen wearing red or maroon sweatshirts and wears a Fitbit. His dog is a young female brown and white boxer named Daisey. This took place between 3 and 4:30 pm on Monday.
If you see this person be careful. The police have not yet been called for fear of retaliation. We are hoping local Mason Neck folks know who he is and can tell us. Please let us know!
Thanks,
Allison Mills

Breathing Easier in NOVA & Thurs 10am Hearing
Northern Virginia friends:
Got asthma? ...know anyone with asthma?
A leading cause of asthma is smog.
Three of the largest industrial air polluters in Northern Virginia are the subject of a public hearing this Thursday morning. (See red dots on map below.) They are:
Covanta Alexandria/Arlington: the trash incinerator that burns 975 tons/day of trash from Alexandria and Arlington, plus Maryland, DC and the Carolinas. Largest air polluter in Alexandria.
Covanta Fairfax: the huge trash incinerator in Lorton, burning 3,000 tons/day of trash from Fairfax County, Prince William County, other parts of Virginia, plus Maryland, Washington, DC and five other states. Responsible for 75% of Fairfax County's industrial air pollution.
Possum Point: 2,000 megawatt gas-burning power plant, responsible for 82% of the industrial air pollution in Prince William County.
WE'D LIKE YOUR HELP TO GET THESE MAJOR POLLUTERS CLOSED.
** If you can attend the hearing this Thursday, see the info below. Public comments will be open from 12/6 to 12/21, so look for an action alert from us soon that you can easily sign online. Beyond that, if you'd like to learn more and get involved, please let me know you're interested! **

PUBLIC HEARING:
DATE/TIME: 10am Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018
Half-hour Q&A Session, followed by Public Hearing
LOCATION: VA Department of Environmental Quality
Northern Regional Office Conference Room
13901 Crown Court, Woodbridge VA 22193 (map)
TOPIC: The state is about to require these three plants to meet stricter limits on nitrogen oxide (NOx) pollution that creates smog and triggers asthma attacks. For the gas-burning Possum Point power plant, the requirement is for their largest of 12 burners, one that burns oil, but is hardly used. (98% of their energy comes from burning gas.)
MORE INFO: For copies of the public notice (within info on how to comment), and the new air permit proposals, see: https://www.deq.virginia.gov/Programs/Air/PublicNotices/airplansandprograms.aspx
GET INVOLVED!
Most of the country doesn't burn their trash. Trash incineration is the most expensive and polluting way to manage waste or make energy -- dirtier than coal plants and worse than landfills. We also desperately need to move away from fossil fuel burning. We can transition our region away from trash burning and supporting fracking. If you want to help, please just shoot me a quick note to say you're interested. Showing support for stricter state standards is helpful, but it'll take local organizing to close these plants for good.
