Update and Clarification: BLM Mustang Trailhead (Harley Rd.) - to open weekends morning to evening

To update and clarify:

The gate is always open to the trailhead itself. To clarify, the field will be open to accommodate vehicle parking so as not to create congestion on Harley Rd.

thank you,
MNCA

Mason Neck Neighbors:

Due to the corona virus there have been a high number of vehicles visiting Mason Neck on weekends. This has caused vehicles being parked on Gunston Road and Harley Road as well in some of our neighborhoods with people, children, pets and baby strollers enjoying the warmer weather and leaving their more confined spaces.

With the parking problems, state and regional park operators and the BLM have offered to open the Mustang Trailhead parking lot on Harley Road. We are very lucky to enjoy living on Mason Neck so please be courteous to those enjoying the outdoors.

Please report to the local police if any use of all-terrain vehicles on park property is observed.

thank you,

Mason Neck Citizens Association

Power outage - Two separate incidents

Two trees are down across Gunston Road.

First is near Gunston Hall with tree pulling wires down and causing a fire on the bank. This one will take some time to repair.

Separately another tree is across
power lines between Stonemanor and The Reserve.

Fw: COVID-19 Update: Free NOVA classes for high school seniors

April 18, 2020
To the Fairfax County Community,

For parents of FCPS students, I know this has been a frustrating week. The transition to fully digital learning evidently did not go as planned. As a parent and a County leader, I understand your concerns. I have spoken with members of the School Board, they are committed to getting distance learning back up an running and making sure that Fairfax County students have a meaningful curriculum and educational experience for the remainder of this school year.

FCPS hopes with upgrades that distance learning will be back on Monday. Until then, FCPS is asking families to make Google Chrome their default browser for the best experience with Blackboard going into next week.

See below for the full April 18 edition. For the resources mentioned in past newsletters, visit my website. If you have a friend who would like to sign up for this newsletter, they can do so here.
Jump Start program from Northern Virginia Community College

  • NOVA is offering tuition-free online classes for approximately 70,000 Northern Virginia high school students this summer.
  • Classes are for rising and graduating seniors looking to earn college credit.
  • The program will run from June 1 to July 15.
  • Learn more here.

For those who have recovered from COVID-19

  • If you have tested positive for COVID-19 and you have been symptom-free for 14 days, you may be able to be a convalescent plasma donor.
  • Though there is not yet a treatment for COVID-19, Inova is hoping donated plasma will help patients currently fighting the virus.
  • Learn more here.
  • Inova is also in need of blood donations, review the eligibility requirements here.

Financial Assistance

  • Representative Beyer's Office released information on financial assistance available to northern Virginians.
  • It details direct payments, explanations of unemployment insurance, information for federal workers and students, and more. Read the guide here.
  • Here is also a guide for those in need of housing assistance.

Updates from Governor Northam

  • The Governor extended Executive Order 53 until May 8 which defined closures for essential and non-essential businesses. Read the FAQ here.
  • The stay-at-home order is still in effect until June 10.
  • Northam also promised that he is working with Maryland, DC, and North Carolina to coordinate the appropriate time for any future re-openings.

Water

  • We have received some questions regarding drinking water quality during this time. Because of existing water treatment requirements and water quality standards, municipal drinking water is safe for consumption and hand washing.
  • Groundwater is also safe from COVID-19 because it undergoes natural processes to remove viruses, bacteria, and other microbial contaminants.
  • Read more on drinking water from the Virginia Department of Health.

Price gouging and other scams

  • As a result of Virginia's state of emergency, it's unlawful for any supplier to sell, lease or license, or to offer to sell, any necessary goods and services at an unconscionable price.
  • Consumers can contact the Virginia Attorney General and Fairfax County Consumer Affairs for information or to file a complaint.
  • Find contact information and learn more here.

Fairfax Connector

  • Fairfax County is asking that passengers wear non-medical face coverings while riding Fairfax Connector buses.
  • Service reductions and other updates can be found here.

Small Business Microloans

  • On Tuesday, the Board authorized a microloan fund in which small businesses can apply for loans of up to $20,000 at 0% interest.
  • I also asked staff to return to the Board with a proposal to extend similar resources to our County nonprofits.
  • Microloans will serve second to federal funding for businesses that may not qualify.
  • Applications will be taken starting April 28 and will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • Learn more here and how you can apply here.

How you can help

  • Donate to the Falls Church News Press here, Inside Nova here, and support Reston Now and Tysons Reporter here. You can also become a supporter of Reston Now on Patreon.
  • You can support the Workhouse Arts Center here.
  • The National Zoo is looking for donations to ensure their animals are fed and well cared for.
  • For more, check the "How You Can Help" section of my website.

Other updates

  • The Animal Shelter has begun the adoption process again through virtual adoptions. Read more.
  • The Park Authority has launched the Virtual Exploration Center, which offers tools for kids to stay healthy, connected, and engaged from home.
Essential Personnel: Dianne Hon

  • George Mason University is highlighting the stories of their former students who are working on the front lines of the pandemic for localities around the region.
  • Dianne Hon is an Intake Officer and Monitored Diversion Counselor at the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.
  • "Until recently I interpreted 'essential personnel' as having to work during county closures due to inclement weather. I have always found going to work on those days exciting as well as comforting knowing my family was safe at home."
  • Thank you Dianne for all of your work. Read her story here.
Health
Common Health Questions:

  • Not every case of coronavirus has symptoms, but those that do may appear 2-14 days after exposure. Some of the symptoms you might experience are below:
  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Shortness of breath
  • Continue to follow the health guidelines:
  • Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer if that isn't an option (especially when in public places)

  • Social distance
  • What it means to social distance, self-isolate, and quarantine.
  • The CDC recommends wearing non-medical masks to slow the spread of COVID-19. Read here for information and to learn how to best wear a mask and how to make your own.
