Mason Neck - Route 1 with Gunston Cove Road/Gunston Road

At the suggestion of MNCA - VDOT has agreed to reconfigure the Eastbound intersection of Gunston Road and Rt. 1 as per below!

Dear Ms. Clawson,
Thank you for your letter on behalf of the Mason Neck Citizens Association regarding lane use modification and a potential new right turn only lane for the east bound approach at the intersection of Richmond Highway and Gunston Cove Road / Gunston Road.  Your correspondence was forwarded to the Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT's) Northern Virginia District Office with a request that we review and assess your concerns.
Our Traffic Engineering (TE) staff analyzed different options. The first lane use configuration option would convert the lane usage from left + thru/right to left/thru + thru/right for the east bound approach, but it requires repaving/restriping the receiving lanes and adding additional drainage improvements. However, the second proposed alternative (left/thru + right) does not require changes to the receiving lanes, and is therefore more affordable and can be implemented more quickly.
Therefore, the lane use configuration for the east bound approach will be modified from LEFT + THRU/RIGHT to LEFT/THRU + RIGHT which will improve the traffic conditions for this approach during the PM peak.
Accordingly, we will be moving forward with the design and implementation of the traffic signal modification for this intersection which will take a couple of months. It should be noted that the east bound free flowing right-turn lane (southwest channelizing island) will be widened to improve the turning radius for semitrailer trucks as part of the project as well.

Concerning the potential for a new east bound right turn lane, a project of this scope would require significant funding and support from the Fairfax County Department of Transportation, and all existing funding for these types of projects has already been allocated for the next six year period.
We appreciate you taking the time to contact us and for sharing your observations. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding our ongoing efforts, please contact Mr. Gustavo Torres at (703) 259-2408 or Gustavo.Torres@VDOT.Virginia.gov in our Traffic Engineering Section.
Sincerely,
Hari K. Sripathi, P.E. Regional Operations Director VDOT-Northern Region Operations

Critical Developments in Our Investigation of Dominion's Possum Point Coal Ash Ponds

Take-Action-2Despite intense public opposition, Virginia's State Water Control Board approved an extremely lax waste water permit that would allow Dominion to start dewatering its coal ash ponds into Quantico Creek near the Potomac River. After this approval, Dominion admitted to a secret dumping of 27.5 million gallons of untreated coal ash water into Quantico Creek in May 2015. When asked last year, DEQ Director David Paylor said there had been no discharge into state waters. Potomac Riverkeeper Network filed an appeal of the permit and is seeking an EPA investigation into the May 2015 discharge. Now, in a report by WAMU reporter Patrick Madden, it has been revealed that Director Paylor was flown to the Masters golf tournament and treated to a $1200 bar tab by Dominion in 2013. This kind of "pay to play" junket is now illegal in Virginia, for obvious reasons. Click on the Take Action button and send a letter to the Attorney General asking him to revoke the permit and seek an investigation into Dominion's relationship with DEQ!

Speaking of Dominion... There Was an Oil Spill on the Potomac River

Deadfish_oilsheens
Early in February, Potomac Riverkeeper Dean Naujoks received reports of an oil spill on the Potomac, starting at Roaches Run Waterfowl Sanctuary near Alexandria and drifting downstream about 8 miles. Dean was on site for several days documenting the oil spill and demanding answers. On February 11, the US Coast Guard confirmed that the oil was from a 13,000 gallon oil spill on January 24 at a Dominion transformer station in Crystal City. This followed repeated denials from Dominion that it was responsible. The spill fouled the shoreline and marsh in Roaches Run and killed dozens of geese. Potomac Riverkeeper Network is pushing to make sure that Dominion is held accountable and pays for full cleanup of Roaches Run.

This is a critical time to learn about coal ash in your community. PRKN opposes Dominion's plan, supported by DEQ, to "cap-in-place" the massive coal ash pit at Possum Point, which is known to have leaked toxic metals into groundwater and Quantico Creek for over thirty years.

IMPORTANT UPDATE - Johann DeLeede Murder

The residents of Mason Neck and in particular Hallowing Point have been shocked by the shooting and loss of Johann DeLeede, a long time neighbor, friend, and active participant in our community.  It has left many of us anxious and concerned about the progress in solving this crime.
At the request of our members, there will be a briefing by Captain Powell of the Fairfax County Police Department, at the MNCA meeting on Tuesday, March 15, at Gunston Hall.  This issue will be the first item on the agenda starting at 7:30pm.

Currently, there is a team of detectives and forensic experts with excellent resources methodically gathering evidence in an ongoing effort to solve the case.  It is very much an active investigation, so they cannot answer many questions that are specific to the case.
At this time, detectives from the Major Crimes Division have not located a suspect and ask anyone with information to please contact Crime Solvers electronically by visiting www.fairfaxcrimesolvers.org or text-a-tip by texting "TIP187" plus your message to CRIMES(274637)** or by calling 1-866-411-TIPS(8477), or call Fairfax County Police at 703-691-2131**Text STOP to 274637 to cancel.
