Come See the Tundra Swans with the Friends of Mason Neck State Park!

Join the Friends of Mason Neck State Park for a walk to the see the Tundra Swans! Each year, the Mason Neck area is host to one of Northern Virginia's largest concentrations of Tundra Swans.  Depending on the day, you may see between 200 and 400 swans and hear their haunting calls.  You may also see other waterfowl, including Northern Pintails, American Coots, Black Ducks and Mallards -- and who knows what else?  Bring your binoculars if you have them.  If not, we will have binoculars and telescopes for people to share. The tide will be high when we get there, which will maximize the likelihood that the birds will be close to us.

We will gather at the Woodmarsh parking lot, which is on the left of High Point Road about a quarter mile BEFORE the Mason Neck State Park Contact Station, at 9:00 AM.  It is about a 1-mile walk on level ground to the bird blind at the marsh.

There is no charge for the hike, and there is no need to pay the State Park entrance fee since we will be outside the park.

Notification to Press for Dedication Event
Date/Time: December 10, 2017 at 2 PM
Location:  Mason Neck State Park Visitor Center
The park is in southern Fairfax County, about 20 miles from Washington, D.C. at  7301 High Point Road, Lorton, VA 22079-4010.
Event:   The Friends of Mason Neck State Park, Inc. will unveil and dedicate a bronze life-size Bald Eagle sculpture and gift it to the park.
The sculpture is entitled:  "Spirit of America" by the nationally renowned artist,
Mike Curtis of Sagle, Idaho.  The sculpture is of a Bald Eagle in flight.

The sculpture is part of a years-long renovation project of the park's visitor center.  The Friends commissioned the art work after successfully concluding their fund raising efforts earlier this year.

A Bald Eagle was chosen as the subject for the sculpture because one of the prime reasons the park was established in 1985 was to protect habitat of the nation's symbol.  The eagle population has since had a resurgence after near extinction in the lower 48 states.

Significance:  Of the 36 Virginia state parks, Mason Neck will be the first to have an iconic sculpture to represent the park.

Invited Dignataries:
  • Clyde Cristman, Director of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation
  • Craig Seaver, Virginia State Parks Director
  • Scott Surovell, State Senator, District 36
  • Kathy Tran, State Delegate elect, District 42
  • Dan Storck, Fairfax County Mount Vernon District Supervisor

November 2017 Newsletter

Registration is open for

SWANFALL 2017:  "Intriguing Waterfowl of Mason Neck"

Sunday, December 3, 2017

2:00- 4:00 p.m.

Join us on December 3, 2017 for the Friends of Mason Neck State Park's Third Annual Swanfall holiday celebration.  Once again, the Jammes House, a former hunting lodge in Mason Neck State Park, will be decorated for the holidays.  You can enjoy a light buffet in this unique home situated on the banks of Occoquan Bay, followed by a fascinating presentation by Paul Bacich, a renowned author, editor, and conservationist.

As the leaves begin to fall and winter approaches, the population of waterfowl swells on Mason Neck. More than thirty species of ducks, geese, swans, and other waterfowl appear.  Drawn by the protected waters of the bays and the abundant plant and animal food sources, more than 30,000 waterfowl wintered in the nearby Potomac and adjacent waters last winter.

Paul Baicich will introduce us to our winter visitors and discuss the importance of conserving wetlands such as those right here on Mason Neck. We will also learn about the Federal Duck Stamp, one of the most successful conservation tools ever created to protect habitat for birds and other wildlife.  Paul served as an editor for the American Birding Association, received the Ducks Unlimited "Wetland Conservation Achievement Award." He co-authored "A Guide to the Nests, Eggs and Nestlings of North American Birds" and the recently-published book "The Crossley ID Guide: Waterfowl". He is President of the Friends of the Migratory Bird/Duck Stamp and has been a volunteer at Huntley Meadows Park's Wood Duck and Hooded Merganser nest-box program for almost 25 years.

A silent auction will feature photographs by Randy Streufert, whose stunning pictures of birds on Mason Neck have graced the cover of Virginia Wildlife magazine and the walls of the Park's Visitor Center.  We will also raffle Duck Stamps and signed copies of Mr. Baicich's recently-published book.

The program fee is only $10 and includes admission to the park.

You can register at

WHERE IS THE EAGLE?

You may have noticed that the concrete base for "Spirit of America," the Bald Eagle sculpture commissioned by the Friends of Mason Neck State Park, has been placed just outside the Visitor Center.  The eagle is waiting in storage until the concrete base has hardened sufficiently to support the 350-lb sculpture.

We will have a formal unveiling and dedication when the eagle has landed.  We'll send you an email providing information about the date and time in the near future.

MATTHEW BENGER --

MASON NECK STATE PARK VOLUNTEER

Matthew Benger, his mother Mary, and the Enchanted Owl at Park After Dark

Matthew, a seventh-grader, has been volunteering at Mason Neck State Park for about five years.  His first volunteer event was a Cub Scout Den project near the maintenance shed.  Matthew and his mother Mary have helped cook breakfast for young campers at Mason Neck State Park's Great American Campout for the past two summers.  When Matthew visits the Park, he often goes treasure hunting – cleaning trash from the Park's trails.  Most recently, he served as a "sweep" on two of the Enchanted Forest hikes during the Park After Dark event, then helped pick up the electric candles that guided the young hikers through the Park.

Thanks, Matthew, for making Mason Neck State Park better!

[MNCA-Notices] 12 Question Survey for the NEW LORTON COMMUNITY CENTER

Please take the time to fill out the survey as to what YOU would like to see in the development of the new Lorton Community Center! We are meeting as a Visionary Steering Committee to put forth ideas from the community. Your input is critical to make it a success!

LORTON COMMUNITY CENTER SURVEY

In November 2016, Fairfax County voters approved the Human Services and Community Development Bond Referendum which provided funding for the construction of the Lorton Community Center. The facility will serve as new location for LCAC and the Lorton Senior Center as well as providing a broader array of services, programs and activities for individuals of all ages and abilities throughout these communities.

The future Lorton Community Center will be located adjacent to the Lorton Community Library on Richmond Highway in Lorton. The project is currently entering the initial design stage and is targeted for completion by early 2022.

Fairfax County Community Centers are multi-service facilities that serve the needs of individuals of all ages and abilities throughout Fairfax County. To that end, the county is seeking public input to ensure that this new facility is designed to meet the needs and interests of the communities they serve. We ask that you please take 10 minutes of your time to complete a 12 question survey regarding the facility.
