[MNCA-Notices] Ribbon Cutting on May 18 Celebrates the Completion of Phase 1 and New Apartments

A community swimming pool (under construction) will serve new Liberty residents.

On Thursday, May 18, 2017, at 10 a.m., local dignitaries, county staff, historic preservationists, and real estate developers will cut the ribbon on Liberty, a new urban village that will be home to single-family residences and loft-style apartments, and 138,000 square feet of commercial space.
Liberty represents the first phase of a public-private project to redevelop the historic core of the former Lorton Reformatory. The 80-acre reuse area is the final piece of a land development puzzle that began in 2001 when Fairfax County purchased 2,300 acres from the D.C. Department of Corrections.

EVENT DETAILS

Liberty Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
Thursday, May 18, 2017 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
8400 Lorton Road, Lorton VA 22309
The event includes a tour of the new Liberty Crest Apartments.

 Liberty reuses former prison buildings and preserves the historic character of the site, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. When complete, Liberty will be a vibrant, walkable community full of shopping and dining options for new residents living in apartments, townhouses, and single-family homes. This long awaited mixed-use project will create another desirable place to live, work, play, learn, and thrive in Fairfax County – a tenet of the county's strategic plan for economic success. Phase I includes:

*       Adaptive reuse of historic buildings

*       Preservation of interior and exterior historic features

*       165 multifamily historic apartments

*       83 new townhomes

*       24 new single-family homes

*       Civic and community spaces: a clubhouse, swimming pool, fitness center

*       Historic retail and commercial space: the chapel and powerhouse

BACKGROUND

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the master development agreement, or business plan, for the project on July 29, 2014. The estimated $188 million project is a public-private partnership between Fairfax County, The Alexander Company of Madison, Wisconsin, and McLean-based developer Elm Street Development. Local builder Van Metre Homes will be constructing the townhomes and detached single-family homes in the Liberty community. The county is contributing $12.8 million toward the share of public infrastructure design and construction and the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services is overseeing the public infrastructure construction activities. The county extended use of the property to the developers by way of a 99-year ground lease for the historic properties and fee-simple transfer for the areas being developed with new construction.

[MNCA-Notices] Friends of Mason Neck State Park Hike Tomorrow Morning

Friends of Mason Neck State Park

DON'T FORGET THE FRIENDS HIKE TOMORROW MORNING, 8:15 AM!

Enjoy being an Early Bird and have a special opportunity to see Mason Neck State Park wake up.  The Friends of Mason Neck State Park and their friends are taking a moderate 2.6 mile round trip guided hike to Kane's Creek.  Bring your drink and food of choice to indulge yourself as you look for wildlife in an observation blind overlooking the creek, a good place to see Bald Eagles.  Chicks hatch by the end of April, so parents may be securing food and the nests.

You will also have a chance to informally discuss what is needed or wanted to enhance the Park's resources and visitor experience.  What do you want to know along the Eagle Spur Trail?  How can Friends best support the Park and its visitors?

Dogs on leash are welcome, but the trail is not suitable for strollers.

Meet at the Wilson Spring parking lot, jUst past the Contact Station, at 8:15 AM.

[MNCA-Notices] Veterans Fishing Adventure - Pohick Bay Regional Park - May 6-7th from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Hailey and I started Veterans Fishing Adventure recently.  Our website is just about ready to launch.  Our web address is https://veteransfishingadventure.org/

Until then, here is some information about us:
Veterans Fishing Adventure was started by a Marine and his daughter. We offer Veterans of the US Armed forces fishing trips on the Potomac River in Fairfax VA and Occoquan River in Lorton, VA.
We are proud to offer this opportunity along with our volunteers to those that have served our country proudly to enjoy a favorite pastime. We specialized in offering those veterans with current physical limitation (wheelchair) an opportunity to participate. To allow members of the US armed forces that are disabled to take their children fishing and fully participate

We have a prototype of our boat (expected completion in 2 months) and will be at Pohick Bay Regional Park in Lorton VA.  We will be there this weekend May 6th and 7th from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM at the Boat Ramp.  We would love if you would stop by to hear about our organization, see the boat and if you have any suggestions we would love to hear them!
