Saturday History Program at Mason Neck State Park

Locating Capt. John Smith's Tauxenent in Belmont Bay

Mason Neck State Park Visitor Center

10:00 AM Saturday, June 15, 2019

In June and July of 1608, Captain John Smith and a crew of 14 sailed a 2-ton barge up the Potomac River, exploring and mapping the Occoquan river, Belmont Bay and the area now known as Mason Neck.  He described Tauxenent, the principal village of the Taux, or Dogue, Indians.  The exact location of Tauxenent has been the subject of investigation for many years.

Join Richard Eilers, an avocational archaeologist with more than 3 decades of involvement in archaeological excavations on the Mason Neck area, as he discusses the basis for a multi-year survey of Belmont Bay, with a focus on Doeg Island.  Mr. Eilers and Dr. Michael Johnson, the former Fairfax County senior archaeologist, are collaborating on reconstructing the evolutionary history of Belmont Bay using sonar surveys and Virginia Marine Resources Commission-permitted limited underwater test pit excavations.

This program is free.  Regular Park Admission Fees apply.

Change in Saturday's History Day Program at Mason Neck State Park

Dr. Mike Johnson is unable to present his program on the Native Americans of Mason Neck this Saturday.  Mason Neck State Park plans to schedule his talk at a later time.  The Park is instead offering the following program at the same time as the original program:

Locating Capt. John Smith's

Tauxenent in Belmont Bay

Mason Neck State Park Visitor Center, 10:00 AM Saturday, June 15, 2019

In June and July of 1608, Captain John Smith and a crew of 14 sailed a 2-ton barge up the Potomac River, exploring and mapping the Occoquan river, Belmont Bay and the area now known as Mason Neck.  He described Tauxenent, the principal village of the Taux, or Dogue, Indians and showed its general location on a map.

However, the exact location of Tauxenent has been the subject of investigation for many years.

Join Richard Eilers, an avocational archaeologist with a long history of involvement in archaeological excavations on the Mason Neck area, as he discusses the basis for a multi-year survey of Belmont Bay, with a focus on Doeg Island.  Mr. Eilers and Dr. Michael Johnson, the former Fairfax County senior archaeologist, are collaborating on reconstructing the evolutionary history of Belmont Bay using sonar surveys and Virginia Marine Resources Commission-permitted limited underwater test pit excavations.

Mr. Eilers completed the Archaeological Society of Virginia's (ASV's) archaeological technician certification program and has conducted thousands of hours of field and laboratory work with Fairfax County Archaeology, Gunston Hall Archaeology, Mount Vernon Archaeology and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.  He is a past president of the ASV's Northern Virginia Chapter and current treasurer of the ASV's Maritime History Chapter.

The event is free and open to the public.

MNCA Annual Election Meeting TONIGHT, June 4, 2019 at Gunston Hall at 7:00 pm.

Dear Mason Neck Resident:

The MNCA Annual Election Meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 in Gunston Hall at 7:00 pm.

(Socializing and light refreshments will start at 7:00, official meeting at 7:30.) While all the current Board members are running uncontested we still need members to vote to satisfy our by-laws.,

We are VERY PLEASED that the feature event of the evening will be a presentation by Chris Sperling,  Fairfax County's senior archeologist.  His predecessor has referred to Mason Neck as the most archeologically interesting part of Fairfax County, which is saying a lot. Native Americans lived here for thousands of years, Captain John Smith visited during his 1608 exploration of the Chesapeake Bay, Colchester in the 18th century was a thriving town with a busy seaport, and George Mason built Gunston Hall in the 1750's.

By-Laws: We will also have a vote on two changes to our by-laws proposed by the Board.

• The first one changes the number of Board members from 12 to any number between 9 and 15. The higher number will help us ensure that all parts of the Neck are represented while the lower number will allow us to function in years when there is are fewercandidates. We anticipate that the actual number will usually be 12 or more, as we currently have a 13th person serving as acting representative from Harbor View.
• The second one merely specifies the duties of the secretary. Thiscorrects an omission in the current bylaws, which do specify the duties of the other officers.

If you're not a paid-up MNCA member—you should be!  We are the only group that represents all of Mason Neck on community issues. We have an impressive, wide ranging list of successes, from keeping the state park open to making improvements to roads and traffic flow.  Dues are only $20 per person – a bargain considering the impact you can make.   If you haven't paid for 2019 you can do so at the meeting, or send a check made out to "MNCA" to PO Box 505, Mason Neck, VA, 22199, or use PayPal at our website, MasonNeck.org

Finally, consider serving on the Board in the future. It's a rewarding experience that requires only a desire to help the community and a modest commitment of time.  If interested, inform any Board member for consideration by the Nominating Committee.  Alternatively, any MNCA member can be on the ballot simply by submitting a written statement two weeks before the election.

Sincerely yours,

Hillary K. Clawson, MNCA President

 Statements of the Candidates

Hillary K. Clawson, Gunston Manor. Candidate for President(Incumbent)

After enjoying a career in information technology, I moved to Mason Neck with my husband,

Kem. We have been here for 13 years and there's not a day that goes by that we don't

reflect on how fortunate we are to live in this exceptional place. With interests that

include wildlife photography, cycling, hiking, boating, gardening, and history, this is ideal!

It's a joy, an honor, and our responsibility to preserve Mason Neck and share all that it has

to offer with our family, friends, and visitors.

I am currently serving my fifth term as President of the Mason Neck Citizens Association.

I'm a founding member and President of the Friends of Mason Neck State Park, Inc., a non-

profit 501(c)(3) corporation.

As president of both organizations, I've been able to forge strong relationships with our

legislators, keeping Mason Neck's interests at the forefront. I look forward to continuing to

work with our impressive group of board members as we explore new ways to strengthen

MNCA and maintain the unique environment we all enjoy on Mason Neck.

============================================================================

Marvin Miller, Mason's Collar, Candidate for Vice President (Incumbent Director)

During the thirty plus years my family and I have had the privilege to call Mason Neck home, we have benefited from its marvelous natural environment and rich historic heritage.  Preserving the Neck's unique qualities has been a long term mission for me.  There have been all sorts of threats over the years.  One governor wanted to install a prison on the Neck where Gunston Hall sits.  Another sought to close Mason Neck State Park.  Developers have wanted to bring sewer to our peninsula so that major housing developments could be constructed.  There have been many efforts, both great and small, to bring major changes to the Neck but they have not been successful.

Not all has been a struggle to protect our special home turf from harm.  With careful effort the Department of the Interior has come to have a stake on the Neck; it is Meadowwood.  We enjoy the beauty of the meadows, horses, and trails.   Gunston Hall has returned to its mission of education and living history.  We on the Neck have garnered the respect of our political representatives and they help us preserve this unique place where we live.

Over the years I have been able to have good relations with those in government from both political parties to enlist their support for us. I have had the opportunity to be involved in the work of protecting our home - the Neck.  If elected, I would be proud to continue this important  work.  Thank you for your consideration.

Bruce Scott, The Reserve, Candidate for Treasurer (Incumbent)

My name is Bruce K. Scott and I have served as President the Mason Neck Citizens Association (MNCA), for two terms.  A little of my personal background, I retired from the US Army in October of 2002 at the rank of Major General.  For the last six years of my Army service, my wife Mary, our six children and I lived in Government quarters at Fort Belvoir that backed up on the other side of Pohick Bay.  We became great fans of Mason Neck during these years.  Even though we owned a home in Fairfax, Mary really wanted to live on Mason Neck.  Although we still own our original home next to the Fire Station on Gunston Road, we have moved three miles down the road and built a new home on the Potomac.  Since moving to Mason Neck, we have tried to stay involved in our community affairs.  Mary is a Docent at Gunston Hall.  My goal of serving on the Board of MNCA has been to advocate policies, plans and actions that ensure that the unique lifestyle and environment we enjoy in this enclave of Mason Neck is protected for our children and our children's children. . Maintaining our unique quality of life and the surrounding environment remains my number one priority.   I look forward to your support.

Dick Kennedy, Hallowing Point, candidate for Secretary (Incumbent)

I graduated from Princeton in 1963 as a Chem Engineer in a class that had zero women and one African-American—in 1964 I was a civil rights worker in MississippiI studied economics at the University of the Americas in Mexico City (where I met Sallie), the Institut Universitaire d'Etudes Europennes in Turin, Italy, and finally got a PhD from Rice UniversityFrom 1972 to 2003 I was an economic analyst in CIA's Directorate of Intelligence, worked mainly on European issues, and received the Career Intelligence Medal in 2004Great place to be an analyst—we "gather the information and follow wherever it leads".

We moved to Mason Neck in 1978 and feel privileged to live in this beautiful area, where our daughters Bradley and Ashley were born. In addition to MNCA, I am active in the Mason Neck Lions Club and the Friends of Mason Neck State Park. I would like to continue on the Board because of the great work MNCA does to protect our history and environment.

Full disclosure: My other avocation is working for the full legalization of marijuana, to put an end to the insanity of prohibiting a drug that is far safer than alcohol or tobacco, and also has some amazing medical uses; I also advocate for action on climate change in my spare time.

========================================================================

Arsenio Ayon, Hallowing Point, Candidate for Director (Incumbent)

My family and I moved from California over four years ago to pursue high-tech business opportunities with the Federal government.  For the first two years, we lived in Fairfax near Chantilly but after we decided to stay here longer, we looked for a house near the river.   We came to Hollowing Point to an open house for the house that we now live in.  We loved the area and decided to purchase the house.  We think that Mason Neck is an awesome place to live and raise a family and love all of what it has to offer.  I live with my wife (Donnica) and son (Carson) on river drive.

I have served on the board for one year and look forward to adding value as needed.  While living in CA, I served on several neighborhood type organization boards and a community medical clinic.

I currently serve as the CEO of a small business providing high-tech solutions to DoD and civilian agencies around the country and abroad.

I feel privileged to enjoy what the previous generations built in Mason Neck and my goal in serving on the board is help preserve and enhance those efforts.

Rick Hutson, Hallowing Point, Candidate for Director (Incumbent)

I have had the pleasure of serving in the role of a Director for the Mason Neck Citizens Association during the past 10 years.  I believe that our way of life here on Mason Neck is precious and fragile and we must do all that we can to preserve Mason Neck as it is.  I live in Hallowing Point with my wife, Dana, a third generation Mason Neck resident and our two children, Aubrey, and Frank, both fourth generation Mason Neck residents and students at South County High School.  I am an avid runner and kayaker and enjoy the many trails, pristine woodlands and waterways that Mason Neck has to offer.  My family and I love to hike and observe wildlife in the many parks located on Mason Neck and I want to help preserve Mason Neck as the jewel of Fairfax County for my children and my children's children.  I have enjoyed serving on the Mason Neck Citizens Association Board of Directors and I have enjoyed the opportunity to meet our many neighbors here on Mason Neck.  I have enjoyed looking out for the interests of the citizens of Mason neck, and I look forward to continuing to serve the citizens of Mason Neck for another year.

Robert Kolb, Harley Road, Candidate for Director (Incumbent)

Hello!  I am a husband, father of three, retired Soldier, Scout Leader, runner (but very slow), and have been living here for 15 years.  I believe in making a difference – whether it's at home, work, or in the community.  I love this area – the parks, the neighborhood, and the people.  Thank you for your time and hope to continue to serve the residents of Mason Neck!

==========================================================================

Scott Stroh, Gunston Road, Candidate for Director (Incumbent)

Throughout his lifetime, George Mason wrote frequently about his love of Gunston Hall and his appreciation of the natural beauty and abounding resources of the place he called home.  Today, some 250 years later, my family and I are blessed to live at Gunston Hall on Mason Neck, a place we now call home, and a place we love, value, and appreciate for the same reasons Mason wrote about during his lifetime.

But, our love of Mason Neck transcends its natural beauty and rich history.  Just as Gunston Hall the place comes to life because of the stories of those who lived there, Mason Neck's vitality is enriched by the humanity and hospitality of all those whose presence has created an amazing community of friends and neighbors.   My family and I our privileged to be part of this community and inspired by the passions and actions of all those who have helped preserve and support both this place and this community, and I would be honored to help continue this tradition of civic leadership, community service, and neighborly hospitality.

Although I was born in Philadelphia, PA, my family's roots along the Chesapeake Bay fostered a deep love of Virginia history and the natural environment at a young age. Always wanting to live in Virginia, I graduated from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA with a BA in History and Education and continued by education at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN, where I graduated with a MA in History and Museum Studies.

Professionally, I have served as Curator of Collections and Interpretation at the Anacortes Museum in Anacortes, WA, as Curator at Historic Spanish Point in Osprey, FL, as Executive Director of the Roanoke Island Commission in Manteo, NC, as Florida's State Historic Preservation Officer and Director of Historical Resources, and as Executive Director of the Milwaukee County Historical Society.  I was appointed Executive Director of Gunston Hall in June 2013.

I have always welcomed opportunities to support my community through participation with professional, community, and civic organizations and I currently serve on the Board of Directors for Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce and on Council for the Virginia Association of Museums. Prior service includes three terms as Secretary on Council for the American Association of State and Local History (AASLH), as chair of the AASLH Annual Meeting Program Committee and the AASLH Mentor Committee, as Chair of the Sarasota County Historical Commission, as a board member of the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation, the Florida Greenways and Trails Commission, the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce, and as a member of the Community Advisory Board for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Albemarle Ecological Field Site. Finally, I served on the Randolph-Macon College Society of Alumni Board of Trustees and am an eight year member and Past-President  of Rotary.

In closing, thank you for the honor of being considered as a potential board member of the MNCA and thank you all for welcoming my family and I to such a special place.

Mark Thompson, Hallowing Point, Candidate for Director(Incumbent)

My wife Kim and I have lived in the Washington DC metropolitan area since 1983. We moved here from North Carolina after college and have lived in various homes around the area over the years. We found Hallowing Point in 2003 by happenstance by following "For Sale" signs while visiting Mason Neck State Park. Once we saw the property at 6109 River Drive, our current residence, we fell in love. We purchased the property immediately and have been here since. We love the area and as a family enjoy all of the facilities available to us on the Neck. I have served once previously on the Hallowing Point board and am the original designer and builder of the community website. Professionally, I currently manage investment real estate after a long career as the owner of a local business. Kim and I have two family dogs and one grown son, Cameron, who lives locally.

Peter Weyland, Gunston Manor, Candidate for Director(Incumbent)

I moved to Gunston Manor in 1976 and enjoy the river, nature and people who inhabit this wonderful peninsula. As we all know, Mason Neck is a unique and special place in this busy metropolitan area. But, it will only remain unique if we, as a community, do everything we can do to protect it.

I am a current board member of the Mason Neck Citizen's Association (MNCA). I am a past president of the Gunston Manor Property Owners Association (GMPOA) and have served on the board of the Lorton Community Action Center (LCAC) for the past nine years. I am the current MNCA representative to the South County Federation. I am co-founder and vice chairman of the South Fairfax Chamber of Commerce.

I own an internet hosting and listserve business trading as Look.Net. For the past 24 years, I have provided pro bono interest services for MNCA, LCAC, GMPOA, and other area non-profit organizations.  I believe in giving back to our community.

I love the beauty and tranquil environment of Mason Neck. I hope to continue to work with the board and the greater community to retain our quality of life for years to come.

Nancy Wilochka, Springfield Farms, Candidate for Director(Incumbent)

A native New Englander, I stumbled upon Mason Neck while trying to find a place with a good school system for my son, where I could tend to my menagerie of animals at home, and where I could swing a reasonable commute to my Federal job in the District. A place where I could network with outdoor enthusiasts and seek out neighbors who help one another. After spending a year boarding my horse at local stables, I purchased my house on Springfield Drive in June of 2012 - and two dogs, three horses and three cats later, it is now my wonderful home.

While I enjoy the solitude of my home and nearby hiking and equestrian trails, I also value the importance of networking. I have a deep appreciation for community involvement, and hold in high regard the actions and deeds of those who have shaped our Mason Neck. Late in 2018, I was invited to fill a vacancy on MNCA's Board, and I feel together we've made significant progress in keeping the legacy of MNCA going strong. I wish to continue to help all of us preserve our invaluable resources on Mason Neck, and I bring along decades of experience in communications to that end.

I volunteer because I feel that I can make a difference with the skills and tools that have shaped my 30+ years of work in communications. I'm a Desert Storm veteran, having served for 12 years in the Air Force as a public affairs officer and newspaper editor; 20 years in commercial broadcasting as a morning news anchor, and currently as a senior public affairs officer for the U.S. Department of Transportation.
