Candidates Night Tuesday--Please Attend, even if you have to come late or leave early

(Partially redacted)

Our elected representatives from both parties have been very supportive of the Neck--remember Governor McDonnell's 2010 plan to close the state park?  MNCA led the resistance and quickly got strong support from Supervisor Hyland, Delegate Albo, Senator Puller, and Congressman Connolly--and the park stayed open. But that support likely won't continue without citizen involvement, and attendance at last year's event was disappointing, to say the least.

At least eight candidates will be there, maybe ten, and it's a chance to hear from them directly, ask questions, meet some of their staff people, and perhaps get in a personal chat with one or more of them, before or after the main meeting.

Start time is 7:00, with maybe 15-20 minutes for refreshments and socializing, and end time will be no later than 9:00.

We all agree on MNCA's stated purpose:
"To promote the preservation of the historic, archaeological, and environmental resources of Mason Neck and to educate the community, and the public in general, about the unique resources of Mason Neck."

Hope to see you Tuesday!

Secret Garden Birds & Bees - Saturday October 19, at Mason Neck State Park

Fall Webworm Weaves Webby Tents

Fall Webworm Weaves Webby Tents

"Over the past week we have received an increase in calls to the Urban Forest Management Division from residents who are concerned about large webby tents in tree branches," said Joan Allen, chief, Forest Pest Branch, UFMD.  These webs are caused by fall webworm, a native caterpillar that spins webs over leaves of deciduous trees. There's a very noticeable increase in fall webworm in the area compared to recent years. Population levels for this pest are cyclical and it is not unusual to see population levels rise and fall over a span of a few years. This insect does not pose a serious risk to trees and native trees are well adapted to this pest. For more information about trees, call the Urban Forester of the Day at 703-324-1770, TTY 711.

Owl Moon Evening on Saturday September 14

OWL MOON

   SEPTEMBER 14

    7:00PM

Imagine sitting outside in the Park as the evening skies grow dim.  The sounds of the night erupt as the park's wildlife begins its nocturnal prowl.  You might hear the call of a coyote or the hoot of a majestic owl as it flies to defend its territory.

Join us under the tent for a very special program – "A Year in the Life of an Owl".  Featuring a Barred Owl, a Great Horned Owl, and an Eastern Screech Owl, and presented by the raptor rehabilitators and educators of Secret Garden Birds and Bees, this is a 'must see' presentation.

What makes this so special?  In addition to being interesting and educational, you will have the rare opportunity to view and these magnificent raptors up close as the rehabilitator walks through the tent and literally brings the birds to you!

Learn what great horned owls, barred owls, barn owls, and eastern screech owls are doing from January through December. Follow them through courtship, nesting, raising young, fledging and finally dispersal of the young to their own territories.

This event is open to the general public and is appropriate for all ages.  Registration is only $10 per person, which will help to offset the cost of the program.  Entrance to the park is free (no parking fee) after 6:30 pm.  Don't miss it!
