[MNCA-Notices] Upcoming South County Federation meeting to discuss the new Lorton Community Center - Feb. 13 South County High School 7:30 pm

The upcoming February 13th meeting will focus on the location of the new Lorton Community Center which will also house the LCAC. Currently the preferred location is next to the Lorton Library. There is an effort by some neighboring communities to consider a move across the street to the old 84 Lumber site. Many people are not supportive of that location due to the impediment of the Route 1 highway due to safety issues, delays in considering the proposed location, and unknown costs. Please consider joining us to support the Lorton Library location.

Lorton Community Center

In November 2016, Fairfax County voters approved the Human Services and Community Development Bond Referendum  which provided funding for the construction of two new community centers - including the new Lorton Community Center. Once completed, this location will  provide a broad array of services, programs and activities for individuals of all ages and abilities throughout these communities.

PROJECT SCOPE AND SITE

The Lorton Community Center will be a two-story building with gymnasium with a total of 33,000 square feet - 3,500 SF of which will be allocated for the Lorton Community Action Center. The project will also include renovations to the Lorton Community Library and enhancements to the park area on the North side of the Library. When complete, the facility will also serve as the new home of the Lorton Senior Center (currently operating in leased space).

The site for this project is located adjacent to the Lorton Community Library at 9518 Richmond Highway. It is anticipated that the project will be completed by early 2022.

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN THE DESIGN/CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

Fairfax County Community Centers are multi-service facilities that serve the needs of individuals of all ages and abilities throughout Fairfax County. To that end, county staff is seeking public input to ensure that the new facility is designed to meet the needs and interests of the surrounding community. There will be multiple opportunities for community involvement throughout the process to discuss everything from construction logistics, amenities and curb appeal to the programming and activities desired at the location.

Community Steering Committee:

Mount Vernon Supervisor Dan Stork convened a Community Steering Committee comprised of 10 community members for the purpose of communicating with interested community members and to advocate with county staff, architects and key stakeholders during the development of the community center. The composition of the committee is representative of the diverse community interests in this project including Lorton neighbors, seniors, youth, athletics, the library and the Lorton Community Action Center.

In total, the county received 807 responses and the results were shared during the Nov. 28 meeting of the Community Steering Committee.
