Food Lion's Online Shopping Service

Neighbors,

We tried it yesterday and it worked pretty well. You have to set up an account, which is easy, esp. if you already have their MVP card. (Another advantage of having an account is that you can see all your recent shopping trips online, the items and their prices, which makes reordering easy.)

The minimum online order is $35, plus $1.99 if you pick up at the store or $3.99 if they deliver. You start by selecting a one-hour time slot--the earliest one might not be the same day. Then you select products by department and sub-category, e.g. dairy and then milk--it shows the products, with pictures and prices, and you click on the ones you want and choose the quantity.

They send a text message when the shopping starts and also when a product is not available--in which case they will substitute something else if they think there is a close substitute, so you may get something you don't want. They were out of a number of items yesterday, and the substitutes were generally very close, except for getting regular wheat bread instead of whole wheat.

They send a text message when your order is ready, and items that need it are kept refrigerated until you come. You park in one of the four spaces designated for food pickups and call the phone number that is posted there. Someone answers promptly and they bring the order to your car in about three minutes. Ours was brought by a very nice young lady, who put it in our SUV and declined a tip, saying it was not permitted.
